He's really not cut out for actual combat. Also, you could say that, being the child of a famous movie star, Michael has a certain problem with branching out and socializing properly; making him sort of a shut-in, aside from the friends he's made out of mutual interests.

Michael, in spite of his very exclusive upbringing, is a generally friendly, if slightly cocky individual who's just looking for a good time. He's eager to aid others in time of need, and is not afraid to use whatever resources he has at hand to do so... which, seeing as his father is a Hollywood actor, leaves him with a lot of resources.

During Myotismon's attack on the real world, and especially Kurata unleashing Belphemon on the world, the United States and its citizens were keeping a watchful eye on these creatures and the destruction they caused; Michael being one of them. Having grown up with a father who was a Hollywood actor, that left him spending quite some time with his mother, who didn't exactly have to work given his father's more than generous salary. He befriended Mimi a while after she moved to New York, and as she took interest in Digimon Online, so did he.

Betamon is generally rather sluggish, especially when not in his natural element. When not in the water, he has to rely more on tanking hits than actually dodging them due to his lack of speed outside of water; another problem, as he's not generally a defensive type.
