However, Keith realized that he was having trouble moving the handle. It wasn't the flames that were the trouble.

Then, gradually, chains began to appear around the handle, covered in static, revealing themselves to be what bound the handle in the first place. They only extended a couple of meters or so before they just stopped in mid-air.


"Chains...?!" Vix blinked.


"That's... Strange," Nanami said, observing...

"Okay, that's not supposed to be happening..."


But Keith, who was exposed to the chains directly, could see where they went. Everywhere. Binding almost everything in sight, objects, people, even if they didn't know it. They extended to no end, off into the distance. He was the only exception he could see.

He dropped the sword, and grabbed the handle with his other hand, and pulled, hard. "Damn it... I'm taking this, and there is no way you stupid bloody chains are gonna-"

Then the chains broke. Everyone in the vicinity was assaulted by multiple vauge images, of events and places far, far away... And a haunting scream of a life being extinguished.


They fell over in shock, as the chains disappeared.

Nanami and her partner were surprised, but not entirely fazed.

Brett about toppled over, blinking.


"What...in the name of God was that?!"


"That was freaky..."

"I... I don't know..." Keith groaned, rubbing his temples, as he got up. His were the most vivid... "I'm not sure what we saw..."

He sighed, looking at the handle, as it disappeared into his Digi-Droid.

"From what I am aware, Mega-based equipment requires 4 pieces," Nanami explained. "Champion-based equipment merely requires 2, while Ultimate-based equipment requires 3..."


"Someone's been doing her research," Vix groaned.


"I will need to report this to Spencer," Nanami said, recalling her partner. "I suggest you one of you grab the egg and carry it back, so it can be sent back to the Digital World."

"Well...I guess I could," he said, picking up the egg.


"You're going to have to teach me to do that feint thing," he said to Brett.


"Yep, I suppose so."

As they walked, Keith showed Brett and Brick his sword and armor, "It's kinda weird, but there are programs in Digimon Online that normally function as a fun little side-game... But when you store item and effect program combinations onto an SD card, you can transform it into those combinations using Digisoul."


"It's pretty useful," Vix chuckled. "It's nice to know my partner is willing to get into the thick of the fighting when he has the means to."


"Yes, they can be empowering... But why they were made is a mystery."

All they got out of Brett was a raised eyebrow.

"...huh," he said. He'd never played Digimon Online. Between school, his miniscule jobs, and practice for the baseball team, he didn't really have time.

Brick smiled.

"Brett tried to fight when we had to face a Boogeymon...but his rifle didn't do much..."


"Don't much know how to fight, myself..." said Brett.

[Candescence]

"You might be able to use your Digisoul," Keith said. "I haven't tried evolving Vix, yet... Might save it for an opponent who might actually be a bit harder than that BlackGreymon. But you can use it to fight, as well..."


"Digisoul is a power humans possess that seemingly comes from the heart," Nanami noted. "It's a fascinating thing... Professor Daimon is the expert on Digisoul. After all... He discovered it."


"HUH?!"

This would be more surprising if they really had any idea of what the hell they were talking about.


"What's digisoul, exactly, then...I mean, do I even have it?"


"Yeah...Brett's never shown any special powers or anything...unless you count his catch as special..."

[Candescence]

He chuckled, putting away his items, and ignited his Digisoul. "THIS is Digisoul. From what I understand, everyone has it, even if they don't know it."


"You can do awesome things with it, like jump crazy high, punch really hard, take less damage..."


"It's a power fueled by human emotions."

Brett blinked and looked at his hand.

"Emotions?"
He flailed a bit as he tried to concentrate. Big nothing.

[Candescence]

"That's... Not how you do it, dude," Keith laughed, "I'm not sure how I discovered mine..."


"Try a quick 'trigger' movement," Nanami said. "Generally, snapping one's fingers or something of the sort can work... Or you can be like Masaru, and punch a Digimon in the face..."

Brett blinked and thought...
He suddenly crouched down, hunched over on the balls of his feet in a catcher's stance.

"Helps me think," he muttered, knowing he looked stupid but he didn't care...
He picked up a crushed soda can and started thinking, his eyes slit.

Even Brick was confused.

"Brett, you okay?"


"Hush, I need to see the signs..."

Brick blinked, but hushed as asked.
Brett suddenly put his hand down between his legs and started wagging fingers seemingly at random.
That's when he suddenly got up out of his stance and threw the can.
Maroon digisoul bloomed around him as he threw it.

BANG!

Despite its aerodynamics, the can took off like a shot from his hand, flaming maroon as it went. It plowed into a trash can in front of a store, punching right through the metal and out the other side, knocking the trashcan over.


"NO ONE EVER SAID I DIDN'T HAVE THE ARM!" he cried, a bit excited.

Brick GAPED.

"WHAT THE HELL DID THAT COME FROM?!"


"Bastards thought they could steal second on me!" smirked Brett.

"HOLY (BEEP)!"


"A rather apt demonstration of what Digisoul is capable of, I think."

That's when Brett blinked and shook his hand.

"Now how do I turn this off?" he asked sheepishly.

Brick just about facefaulted.

[Candescence]

"Um... I guess... You just let it go?" Keith blinked.


"An impressive first use..." Nanami complimented. "But you should pick up the egg again when you're done with it."
